چکیده

The present research involved masked priming lexical decision experiments using, in the crucial condition, masked primes with an orthographic neighbour that was semantically related to the target. Regardless of the lexicality of the prime, a significant priming effect was observed when the relatedness proportion (RP, that is, the proportion of primes and targets that were directly related on the “word” trials) was 2/3 (Experiments 1 and 2). No effect emerged, however, when the RP was 0 (Experiment 3). These results indicate that lexical/semantic activation arises automatically for both the prime and its neighbours. This activated lexical/semantic information appears to be evaluated together with the lexical/semantic information activated by the target, creating a decision bias during the decision-making process, but only when that information often provides a clue as to the nature of the correct decision. Our results, therefore, also provide support for the retrospective account of masked semantic priming. ARTICLE HISTORY Received 12 July 2015 Accepted 15 December 2015

The temporal dynamics of inflected word recognition: a masked ERP priming study of French verbs.

Morphological aspects of human language processing have been suggested by some to be reducible to the combination of orthographic and semantic effects, while others propose that morphological structure is represented separately from semantics and orthography and involves distinct neuro-cognitive processing mechanisms. Here we used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to investigate semantic, m...

Multiple Session Masked Priming: Individual differences in orthographic neighbourhood effects

Multiple Session Masked Priming was used to investigate differences between individuals in the fine-tuning of their lexical representations. The form-priming effects were determined separately for each of the 50 participants, from the patterning of masked priming effects over three neighbourhood (N) levels. At each N level, primes varied in their orthographic similarity to the target Identity, ...

Semantic transparency and masked morphological priming: an ERP investigation.

The role of semantics in the segmentation of morphologically complex words was examined using event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded to target words primed by semantically transparent (hunter-hunt,) opaque (corner-corn), and orthographically related (scandal-scan) masked primes. Behavioral data showed that only transparent items gave rise to priming. The ERP data showed both N250 and the N400...

Are coffee and toffee served in a cup? Ortho-phonologically mediated associative priming.

We report three masked associative priming experiments with the lexical decision task that explore whether the initial activation flow of a visually presented word activates the semantic representations of that word's orthographic/phonological neighbours. The predictions of cascades and serial/modular models of lexical processing differ widely in this respect. Using a masked priming paradigm (s...

Studies of Morphology in Visual Word Recognition with Differing Prime Exposures

The present work deals with two opposing positions on the role of morphology in word processing. Some argue that morphological relationships are simply a convergence of orthographic (formal) and semantic (meaning) relationships (Gonnerman & Seidenberg 2007). An alternative view suggests an independent role for morphology beyond semantics and orthography. These views have tested by behavioral or...
